3 `, K7 R8 I' }8 K1.4 In this paper we describe the results of very simple simulations illustrating how the presence or absence of a leader can affect a group of agents' ability to perform a collective task. We investigate three factors that affect group performance: (1) group size, (2) the presence or absence of an individual with the ability to detect targets at a greater distance than those "visible" to its companions, (3) communication among group members.
